Yuill Homes (owned by Taggart Holdings since 2006) ceases trading

It was with great regret that, in 2006, we saw Yuill Homes, now owned by the Irish house builder, Taggart Holdings, go into administration. Whilst we regretted this news and the effect on Hartlepool, individuals and suppliers, apart from the name, Yuill Homes no longer had any links to our own business which continued to trade successfully.

Some of the original shareholders, led by Cecil's eldest grandchild Edward, who already ran Mowden Park Estates as a successful commercial investment company and Northumbrian Land Ltd as a Land Management company, purchased the original family company name from the receivers and set up Cecil M Yuill Ltd as a Land Management company.

Established 1920 or 2016?

Cecil M Yuill began working with his grandfather as a builder in his native Hartlepool in 1920. While his grandfather was also a chimney sweep, Cecil concentrated on construction and established Cecil M Yuill Builders in 1927. The company thrived in the North East and later worked on repairs to bomb damage in London leading Cecil to incorporate the company in 1940 as Cecil M Yuill Ltd in a response to the War Office who would only deal with (and pay!) registered companies rather than sole traders.

Continued growth in the post war years led to the construction of a new Head Office at Loyalty Road in 1969 with Cecil retiring in 1972 when the company enjoyed an annual turnover of £4 million and employed some 1,000 staff. Cecil died in 1992 by which time his son, Phillip, had taken over the running of the company, steadily growing it further until by 1994, when the Cecil M Yuill Foundation was established, the company had built over 30,000 homes throughout the North East, including 20% of all the housing stock in Hartlepool.

Phillip sold the company to Taggart Holdings in 2006 but the recession took its toll and Yuill Homes ceased trading in 2014.

However, in 2016, some of the original shareholders led by Cecil’s eldest grandchild, Edward, who already ran Mowden Park Estates as a successful commercial investment company and Northumbrian Land Ltd as a land management company, purchased the original family company name from the receivers and set up Cecil M Yuill Ltd.
